Kuntilanak aka The Chanting – Indonesia, 2006

‘Her laugh will be the last thing you’ll ever hear.’

Kuntilanak is a 2006 Indonesian supernatural horror film directed by Rizal Mantovani (Tembang Lingsir; The Uninvited; Wewe; et al) from a screenplay co-written with Ve Handojo. The movie stars Julie Estelle, Evan Sanders and Ratu Felisha.

The English title is “The Chanting”, although this is not a direct translation as a kuntilanak or pontianak is a type of ghost in Indonesian (and wider Malay) folklore.

The film was followed by two sequels, Kuntilanak 2 and Kuntilanak 3, setting up a trilogy with Mantovani returning as director. In 2018, the director rebooted the franchise, making the protagonists a group of children. This latest incarnation is currently available on Netflix.

Plot:

Samantha “Sam” is an orphaned young woman who moves to an isolated boarding house in North Jakarta, trying to avoid the advances of her lecherous stepfather. The landlady of the house, Yanti, tells her that the second floor is locked up with no one allowed inside.

While listing other restrictions, including about a chair in front of a Javanese mirror in Sam’s room, Yanti chants durmo, a Javanese poem said to be able to summon Kuntilanak, a female ghost with half the body of a horse rumoured to be living in a weeping fig in front of the house….

Reviews:

“Many of the scenes with the kuntilanak were suspenseful, and there were plenty of frightening sequences to keep you happy (past the first 45 minutes, that is). The ending was a decent one, though not wholly unsurprising. Kuntilanak wasn’t an overly spectacular film, but it held up well given its deficits.” Beyond the Darkened Door

“The whole visual art of the movie adds to the spooky feeling and the haunted boardinghouse is nicely shot as well. The acting, while not stellar is above average […] The gore is low key and while not entirely original, Kuntilanak is one of the best Indonesian horror movie I’ve seen so far.” Daily Dose of Horror

Kuntilanak is a very creepy movie with quite a few jump out of your seat moments and a soundtrack ‘Lingsir Wengi’. Each and every appearance by the Kuntilanak managed to raise some hair on the back of my skin.” Zainal A, Letterboxd

Cast and characters:

  • Julie Estelle as Samantha – Macabre
  • Evan Sanders as Agung
  • Ratu Felisha as Dinda
  • Alice Iskak as Raden Ayu Sri Sukmarahimi Mangkoedjiwo
  • Lita Soewardi as Yanti

Kuntilanak is a 2018 Indonesian supernatural horror feature film directed by Rizal Mantovani (Tembang Lingsir; JailanGkung; Wewe; et al) from a screenplay by Alim Sudio (Rasuk; Taring). It is a reworking of Mantovani’s 2006 film of the same name, except the protagonists are now children. The movie stars Sandrinna Michelle, Aurélie Moeremans and Fero Walandouw.

Plot:

Five youngsters agree to explore an abandoned house in order to win a reality show contest, which requires them to prove that the stories of the evil Kuntilanak are real. They soon discover that the ghost is very real when it appears from an antique mirror and starts haunting them…

Reviews:

“Despite a few minor areas that aren’t as detrimental as they could be and plenty of far more enjoyable work elsewhere throughout here, this emerges as a wholly thrilling and enjoyable effort.” Don’s World of Horror and Exploitation

“The performances are fine but the yearning for something new, or to be surprised, is overcome by the knowledge that you just want this movie to end. At one point one of the young children puts her hands on the static television for no significant reason at all but to add to Rizal Mantovani‘s checklist for creepy elements to add to the movie.” Ready Steady Cut!

“It would’ve been impressive if it had pulled off the whole ‘The Grudge with an 80’s Speilberg vibe’ motif it had going on, but it showed so little restraint that it worked better as a parody than a horror movie.” Terror Spective

Release:

Kuntilanak is currently available for streaming via Netflix in certain territories.

Shackled – original title: Belenggu – is a 2012 Indonesian psychological horror feature film written and directed by Upi Avianto. The Falcon Pictures production stars Abimana Aryasatya, Imelda Therinne, Laudya Cynthia Bella and Verdi Solaiman.

Plot:

A paranoid bartender haunted by visions of violent murders, a psycho killer in a rabbit costume and a mysterious femme-fatale.

While the bartender is tortured by these nightmares, there are killings going on in town – could the killings be linked to nightmares? In a small town everyone is a suspect…

Reviews:

“The inexperienced horror film director does a nice job engaging the viewer without tawdry shock scenes and by keeping the tension up until the conclusion, but makes too many missteps in pushing through such a nightmarish psychological thriller that requires some leaps of faith to digest its disjointed narrative in total.” Dennis Schwartz Movie Reviews

“A tight, well-directed psychological thriller, Shackled (Belenggu) might not be the most imaginative Asian Horror, but with such an unsettling and distinctive noir style, it’s a solid addition and worthy of watching.” Andrew Heskins, Eastern Kicks

“The horror itself is quite tame, almost comical. Elang’s frequent visions feature a mother and daughter who live next door being slaughtered by the rabbit, but the violent acts themselves are over the top. The arcs of thick blood and squelchy noises, with little shock factor, seem strange given the rest of the film’s controlled approach.” Richard Badley, Electric Sheep

“Such hard work on the aesthetic makes for an even bigger disappointment in a script that slow-winds itself to an outcome that is rather predictable, offering nothing new to the psychological horror stable. The journey, however, is so visually arresting, director-writer Upi Avianto marks herself as a filmmaker to track.” Naila Scargill, Exquisite Terror

” …there are clear similarities to David Lynch’s techniques regarding dream worlds, and to Donnie Darko with the rabbit idea, but we later discover that it is much more than a collection of horror clichés and succeeds in keeping us attentive until the very end.” Alice Pickard, Film Doo

” …the fluffy animal is the sole common link with Richard Kelly’s movie. And of course the very dark atmosphere as well. Upi offers you all the ingredients that are needed for an intriguing scary movie: a gorgeous femme fatale, a psychopath dressed up as a bunny (including with an axe) and of course lots of blood.” Didier Becu, Peek a Boo

“As the story progresses, we slowly get to the root of Elang’s problem and the extent of his imagined carnage and unfortunately the answers come as no great surprise. The film’s biggest problem is not that it unfolds in a wholly predictable fashion, but that it does so incredibly slowly.” James Marsh, Screen Anarchy

“Therinne’s eye-catching perf as the hard-boiled dame, and Nasution’s dogged detective are standouts in an impressive ensemble. Contributing significantly to the mystery is the topnotch production design, which brings a distinct retro feel to the contempo-set tale at well-judged moments.” Richard Kuippers, Variety

Kuntilanak-2-movie-film-horror-supernatural-Indonesian-2019-Rizal-Mantovani-poster

Kuntilanak 2 is a 2019 Indonesian supernatural horror feature film directed by Rizal Mantovani (Tembang LingsirJailanGkungWewe; et al) from a screenplay written by Alim Sudio (RasukTaring). The MVP Pictures production stars Sandrinna Michelle, Andryan Bima, Ali Fikry and Adlu Fahrezi.

The film is obviously a sequel to Kuntilanak (2018), also directed by Rizal Mantovani.

Plot:

Dinda (Sandrinna Michelle), who has escaped the Kuntilanak (female vampire ghost) terror, without the agreement of Aunt Donna (Nena Rosier), intends to meet someone who is believed to be her biological mother, Karmila.

Together with her younger siblings and accompanied by Julia and Edwin, they are trapped in a house in the middle of the forest. Dinda is again forced to deal with Kuntilanak, but in a different way rather than using spikes or spells…

Plot:

“The warmth of the family that was supposed to be the main force of this movie fails to be spotlighted due to the inclusion of inconsequential characters. In fact, the premise and conflict resolution promised go hand in hand. Unfortunately, the story of its branched focus and the evolving character traits makes the resolution empty and unimpressive.” Iruna Ireuna, Kincir [translated]
